On a very, very windy day Elmer, the patchwork elephant, assures all the other animals and birds that nothing could ever blow him away.

The elephants aren't happy, because the hippos river has dried up, and they moved to share the elephants' river. Elmer, the patchwork elephant, decides to investigate to see what happened to the hippos' river. He discovers that if the hippos and the elephants work together, they can move the rocks that fell that are blocking the hippos' river.

When Elmer the patchwork elephant and his cousin Wilbur decide to go whale-watching, as their grandfather Eldo did at their age, their journey becomes far more of an adventure than they anticipated.

Elmer the patchwork elephant finds many things interesting during his walk, but cannot persuade any other animals to stop and enjoy them with him.

When Zebra gets the hiccups, all his animal friends have cures to suggest.
