Description

Shirley MacLaine's only child reveals what it was like growing up with a mother who believed in reincarnation and extraterrestrials - but not necessarily parenthood.

Sachi Parker has led a colorful, idiosyncratic, globe-spanning life. Born in Hollywood but raised in Tokyo, she went to boarding school in Europe, worked as a waitress in Hawaii and France, was engaged to a sheep rancher in Australia, traveled the world as a stewardess for Qantas Airways, and finally settled down in Malibu with her celebrated mother, Shirley MacLaine - and that's when the fun really started. In Lucky Me , Sachi Parker reveals what it's like to be the daughter of the most celebrated singing, dancing, Academy Award-winning, reincarnated spiritualist in the world (and the next).

Sachi's story unfolds like a convoluted mystery in a hall of mirrors, where nothing is what it seems and no one can be trusted. she is sent to Japan at the age of two for at least three different reasons- her parents want her to grow up away from the Hollywood spotlight; her father is in the hospital with hepatitis and needs her; and the Mob plans to kidnap her - none of which turn out to be true. This recurring pattern of accepted story versus hidden reality follows Sachi throughout her rollercoaster life as she careens from one bizarre situation to the next.

Lucky Me offers a vivid snapshot of the last half century from the Rat Pack world of the '60s through the free love consciousness-raising '70s to the new age self-absorption of the present. It's a fascinating look at the culture clash between Japanese serenity and winner-take-all American bravado; a guided tour through the sometimes surreal world of Hollywood and celebrity; and, ultimately, a bittersweet love letter to a mother who is at once universally beloved and an enigmatic puzzle, a larger-than-life superstar who commands the spotlight and yet always seems just beyond reach.
