Abstract: Maps of Nashville; Davidson County; the state of Tennessee; Tennessee cities and counties; Civil War battles, especially those in Tennessee; and a variety of other maps including geologic maps, water resources, and recreation, mostly as they relate to Tennessee. Other states, particularly Southern states and states bordering Tennessee, are also included, with emphasis upon the era of Tennessee settlement, from the 1770s to the mid-1800s. The Smoky Mountains, the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers and other waterways, local lakes and reservoirs are also areas covered by the collection. The majority of maps in the collection are street and road maps, but also include railroad and public transportation routes, aerial photographs, building locations, landmarks, historic sites, and a variety of other features and information. Includes some photocopies.

Scope and content:The collection includes maps of Nashville (1779 to present); Tennessee (prehistoric times to present); Battles of Nashville, Franklin, Shiloh, Chickamauga, along with other Civil War maps pertaining to Tennessee and elsewhere. Maps of Tennessee cities other than Nashville and counties other than Davidson are also included. Some maps are for other states, foreign countries, and wars. There are also geologic maps; minerals, mines, and soil maps; reservoirs, water resources, recreation, and railroad maps for Tennessee and some surrounding states.

Dates used in the finding aid may reflect the time portrayed by the map, not necessarily when the map was created.

Some oversized maps may be housed separately. Rolled maps are housed on shelves in the Map Room; most are in boxes. Their location is reflected in the finding aid.

All rolled maps, bound items, and any items larger than 8.5 x 14 inches must receive staff permission before photocopying to avoid damage to materials. Some items may not be able to be photocopied due to size or condition.
