Biographical or Historical Data
Nathaniel Baxter Jr. was born on Nov. 4, 1844 in Columbia, Tenn. He served in Freeman's Company of the Tennessee Light Artillery during the Civil War, was captured, paroled, and returned to his unit, serving in the Confederate Army until the end of the war. After the war, he was admitted to the Tennessee bar in 1867; married Laura Lavender in Memphis in 1868; and had four children. He owned a 2400 acre farm near Nashville; served as State Supreme Court Clerk from 1880 to 1884; was president of First National Bank in Nashville for eight years; and was president of the Tennessee Coal, Iron, and Railroad Company from 1888 to 1902. In 1910, he was elected to the State Senate as a Democrat from Davidson County, serving until his death on Sept. 29, 1913.
