Description
Abstract: Records and scrapbooks 1970-1996 (bulk 1974-1985) documenting the activities of historical preservation and advocacy organization, Historic Nashville, Inc. Items include many press releases for the period 1976-1985; four scrapbooks covering from 1970 to 1980; and a small quantity of other materials.
Description
Scope and content: Press releases showcase a wide variety of Historic Nashville Inc.'s activities from 1976 to 1985, including their successful efforts to save Union Station; their annual Market Street Festival; regular and special meetings of the group; and awards received and bestowed by the organization, including receiving the Preservation Honor Award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1985 for their preservation education programs in the community, most especially their work in providing resources for teachers through PAST - Preservation Awareness Source for Teachers.
Description
Scrapbooks contain many newsclippings, as well as occasional programs, invitations, flyers, thank you notes and similar materials. "Preservation Book #1" from 1970-1980, concerns downtown deterioration, preservation, and revitalization; Market Street (Second Avenue); HNI's "Adopt-A-Building" program; Union Station; Public Square; efforts to save or demolish the Ryman Auditorium; and the Hermitage Hotel and other historic hotels downtown, some of which were in disrepair. "Preservation Book #2" from 1974-1979 includes topics such as the Riverfront; the former Governor's Mansion on West End Avenue; Germantown and Waverly-Belmont neighborhoods; and other matters. Both of these Preservation scrapbooks have been formally divided into thematic sections.
Description
Two other scrapbooks consist mostly of newsclippings. Subjects in the 1970-1977 scrapbook concern Edgefield; Market Street Festival and Second Avenue; and downtown. This scrapbook shows glue residue, indicating that many items were removed prior to its acquisition by the Nashville Public Library. Another scrapbook spans from 1978 to 1980, and includes information about various fundraisers, tours, and activities, and HNI's involvement in Nashville's Century III celebration.
Description
Other items in the collection include by-laws 1974-1975; a fact sheet c. 1988; recognitions by the governor and General Assembly 1985; a 60 second audio recording promoting the 20th anniversary of HNI in March 1988; and a dramatic poster, undated (probably circa 1975), with the headline "Going - Going - Gone! What's Next?", showing the losses of Peach Blossom and Public Square, and implying impending threats against the Ryman Auditorium and Union Station. Research, recommendations, and lobbying efforts concerning the historical integrity of Lower Broadway and Second Avenue 1991-1996 - including a handbook for building owners in The District, as well as many contact lists and campaign finance disclosures of political candidates, are also part of the collection.
