Biographical or Historical Data
The Central High School Alumni Association was formed in 1958 by Jack Norman and Bob Finley to provide scholarships for Central High graduates. After the school closed in 1971, the association began awarding scholarships to children and grandchildren of Central High alumni. Rebecca Whitsitt (Mrs. Wade) Young, class of 1921 and donor of the materials, apparently served as secretary or held other offices in the organization in the 1970s and 1980s.
Biographical or Historical Data
Central High School was established in 1917 as the first county public high school, outside of the Nashville city limits. In 1921, it was moved to Rains Avenue in the Woodbine area, where it remained until the school closed in 1971. The structure was torn down in 1973 to make way for the WDCN public television building. The school was noteworthy for having one of the earliest student governments in the south. Ben West and Beverly Briley, mayors of Nashville, were among the most well-known graduates of this school.
