The interviews consist of a transcript and sound recordings in two formats: 10 original audio cassettes recorded in 1980 and a set of duplicate cassettes made in 2006; and a set of 3 data CD-Rs containing MP3 files (a preservation master, a copy master, and a use copy). The original cassettes were digitized during a conversion project in 2006.

Description
Scope and content: A series of oral history interviews with former Nashville Mayor Beverly Briley, conducted 21 Mar. 1980-22 May1980 by Paul Clements as part of the Century III Nashville: Nashville Heritage Project. Briley discusses such topics as his childhood and early life; his career as a lawyer and judge; Nashville politics; urban renewal and housing in Nashville; the events of Nashville's civil rights movement and race relations in the city; and the consolidation of the city and county governments to form the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County.
Description
Briley also discusses his experiences in the Navy during World War II.

Biographical or Historical Data
Beverly Briley (1914-1980) served as Mayor of Nashville from 1963 to 1975 and was the first Mayor of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County. A native of East Nashville, he attended Vanderbilt University and the Cumberland Law School. In 1932, he bacme the youngest Tennessean ever admitted to the bar. He practiced law before serving the US Navy during World War II. He served as a judge in Davidson County from 1946-1963.
