General Note
The interviews consist of a partial index and sound recordings in two formats: 19 original audio cassettes recorded in 1987-1989; and a set of 9 data CDs containing MP3 files (a master, a copy master, and a use copy for each of 3 CDs). 18 of the original cassettes were digitized during a conversion project in 2006. A 19th cassette was discovered later and is still only available in analog format.

Description
Scope and content: A series of oral history interviews with former Nashville teacher George Boyles, conducted 17 May 1987-22 Nov. 1989 by Mary Glenn Hearne. Boyles discusses Nashville during the first half of the 20th century, including such topics as streetcar lines; city limits; 1918 train wrecks; an airplane accident in West Nashville; airfields; the last horse drawn fire engine; schools; the Tennessee State Fairgrounds; neighborhoods; the 1916 East Nashville fire; buildings, churches, and businesses; colleges and universities; and cemeteries.

Boyles also discusses his early life and childhood, education, and teaching career.

Biographical or Historical Data
Son of Robert and Kate Louise Stowers Boyles and a native Nashvillian, George Herbert Boyles served as a teacher in Nashville city schools and served with the U.S. Postal Service. He was a graduate of Vanderbilt University, receiving his BA in 1927 and his MA in 1930. He grew up in Sylvan Park and was a member of Second Presbyterian Church.
