Description
Scope and content: Materials in this series include interviews and items relating to individuals who served during peacetime or during periods of conflict other than those wars specified by the Library of Congress in their Veterans History Project. As a general rule, items for this series were not directly solicited, but rather were added to the project in the course of gathering materials and interviews for other segments. Note that individuals who served during one of the major conflicts will be listed within that series, even if their service was not in an active theatre of hostilities (e.g. service during the Vietnam War, but stationed in Germany). Those persons serving during a war, as well as before or after it, will only be listed with that war (e.g. a person who enlisted in the 1980s and served through the Persian Gulf War, will be listed with Persian Gulf War).
Description
Persons in this series describe serving in the Women's Army Corps (WACs) in the late 1970s, stationed in Germany, and a description of a sexual assault while in the hospital at Walter Reed Medical Center (Bowers); service in the Navy aboard the USS Tuscaloosa during the 1980s, especially providing humanitarian relief to Bangladesh (Boyd); service in Korea in the Army in the early 1980s and working for a community newspaper for the homeless in 2011 (Fieselman); the impact the loss of a service connected disability check has had on one woman's life (Herron-Cole); service with the 101st Airborne Division in the Cold War during the 1980s and the difficulties of being a homeless veteran (Hobgood); experiences with the Cannon Air Force Base women's softball team in New Mexico (Howse); in the Air Force medical service in Turkey, Azores, and Greece during the 1970s and 1980s, as well as life as a military couple (Grady and Kathy Cash); service in the Army in Egypt during the time surrounding Anwar Sadat's assassination in the early 1980s (Corleone); service in the U.S. Coast Guard in the 1970s, and in particular testimony against a captain who was intoxicated and wrecked a ship carrying benzene near Galveston, Tex. (Farmer); experiences as a female soldier serving in support of the 10th Special Forces Group near Bad Toelz, Germany during the Cold War (Skopik); serving in South Korea and Germany in the Army in the 1980s (Taylor); and actions with the 82nd Airborne Division in Operation Urgent Fury, the invasion of Grenada (Wilson).
