Biographical or Historical Data
Gilbert "Gillie" M. Orr (1892-1949), was a prominent authority on the Tennessee Walking Horse who originated and wrote a well-known column, "Speaking of Horses," featured in the Nashville Banner newspaper circa 1940s. Orr was born October 28, 1892 on a farm in Prospect, Giles County, Tennessee, the son of Billy MacWilliams Orr and Sarah Gilbert Orr, of Scotch-Irish ancestry. As a boy the family moved to Columbia, Tennessee, where he attended public school. His summers, until he reached the age of sixteen, were spent on the Giles County farms of his two grandfathers, where he gained his early love for horses and the country life.
Biographical or Historical Data
After graduating from Central High School in Columbia, Tennessee, he entered the University of the South at Sewanee, Tennessee, where he was active in the Kappa Alpha fraternity, manager of the football team, president of the German Dance Club, and member of the debating team. During his junior year at college he was afflicted with poliomyelitis and during his convalescence he decided to train for a legal career and entered Cumberland University at Lebanon, Tennessee, where he received his law degree, and later passed the State of Tennessee bar examinations. Orr practiced law briefly in Columbia and was also serving as a Magistrate in the Maury County Quarterly Court. In 1922, Orr was elected to the office of County Court Clerk and served three consecutive terms.
Biographical or Historical Data
On December 17, 1927, Mr. Orr married Miss Virginia Street of Alexander City, Alabama, and they set out to travel around the South producing amateur plays for civic clubs and community groups, working in this vocation for several years. Sadly, when their son Gilbert MacWilliams Orr, Jr. was born, Mrs. Orr passed away. Orr then began to write about horse shows, covering local and regional events. He would, during his career, become one of America's foremost authorities on the Tennessee Walking Horse and a radio announcer at horse shows thoughout the South.
Biographical or Historical Data
In May, 1939, Orr started his well-known column, "Speaking of Horses" in the Nashville Banner. He was a major factor in the growth of Shelbyville's annual Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration, an event program founded in 1939. From circa 1941 until his death, he served as both Director-General of the Celebration and was Editor of "The Blue Ribbon." Gillie Orr also handled all advertising and publicity for the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders' Association of America, Lewisburg, Tennessee. He was an editor for the magazine "Saddle and Bridle" and he contributed to numerous horse publications.
Biographical or Historical Data
Orr was a manager of the Kiwanis Club horse show in Columbia, Tennessee, as well as an active member of the Maury County Horsemen's Association. He was active in civic work in his home city, such as mentoring in the Boy Scouts.
Biographical or Historical Data
Orr died at his home in Columbia on May 10, 1949, from a heart attack. The Gillie Orr Memorial Trust Fund was set up by his many friends to insure the welfare and education of his teenage son.
