Description
Scope and content: Newsclippings, spanning dates from 1918-1941, sometimes including entire pages or nearly complete issues, from the Nashville Banner and Tennesseean newspapers. Early papers sometimes feature photogravure sections. A few clippings relate to members of the Andrews family, especially the three sons of James and Lula Andrews, and a few articles document James D. Andrews's interest in local aviation matters.
Description
Topics include a wide variety of Nashville people and subjects, and often include photographs. Examples include famous visitors to Nashville; histories of the Vendome Theater, Life and Casualty, National Life and Accident Insurance Company, and the Y.M.C.A.; school children; pageants; a retrospective look at fashion, modeled by women and dolls; the Cumberland River flood of 1926-1927; a visit to Oregon by Nashvillian Everett Philpot, Jr.; recollections of working at the Nashville Banner newspaper by female author, Will Allen Dromgoole; a biographical sketch of Kate Van Leer Kirkman; cattle raising, dairying, and horse breeding in Tennessee, especially Wilson County; listings of radio programs in 1930; a joint reunion of Union and Confederate veterans held in Carthage, Tenn.; recollections of James Barnes, Confederate veteran of the 55th Tennessee Infantry; a photograph of a balloon ascension in 1880; the East Nashville fire of 1916; schools; sports, including football and baseball; the Lost State of Franklin; home medicines; TEPCO and TVA; and the last streetcar run in Nashville. A special section issued by the Nashville Banner on Oct. 30, 1932, entitled "Do You Remember Way Back When?" features numerous articles about Nashville residents and topics, roughly covering the time period from the 1880s to the early twentieth-century. A wide variety of other subjects are also included.

Location of Other Archival Materials
A few items contained in Series I - James D. Andrews Series may also be of interest to the researcher. James D. Andrews occasionally used stray bits of paper such as menus, form letters, and other items as note paper. This habit results in the documentation of several places of business or individuals that might otherwise remain obscure. Descriptions of those items can be found in the finding aid to Series I, in the Contents Index, Section VII - Miscellaneous Items.
Biographical or Historical Data
James D. Andrews was born in September 1857 in Tennessee. He married Lula Adaline Maxwell around 1883. Together they had a daughter, Josephine (the future Mrs. Gillespie Sykes); and three sons, all of whom served in the military: Frank Maxwell Andrews; James D. Andrews, Jr.; and William Valery Andrews. James D. Andrews, Sr. was business manager of the Nashville Banner newspaper from 1883 to 1901 and was a real estate agent in Nashville, Tenn. in the early 1900s. He was a vocal advocate for aviation in the city, so much so that some citizens even proposed that the new Nashville airport, opened in 1936, be named in his honor. He represented at least four property owners (William O. Harris; Rychen Brothers dairy; Flora Hammer Bean; and A. A. Buckingham) in the sale of land to the City for the future airport. James D. Andrews died on March 4, 1937 at his home in Warner Place, in Belle Meade, Tenn., and was buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Nashville, Tenn.
