"Lillian Beard, over 100 years old at the time of the release of this DVD, tells her stories of the early days of interpreting in the United States, of her Deaf parents' difficulty in adopting "normal" children in the early 20th century, of her encounter with Helen Keller , of her struggles to become fluent in English and "hearing" culture, of her mentoring of Lou Fant, and of her work in organizing interpreters, first in Houston and then as a founding board member of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf in 1964. This presentation is an insightful look at one of the founding fathers of RID and the 1982 recipient of RID's highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award.
