Description
Scope and content: A collection of recipe sheets produced by the Home Service Department of the Nashville Gas and Heating Company from 1947 to circa 1953. Many recipe sheets have indications that they may have been broadcast on WLAC radio. Most sheets contain recipes, but often they are supplemented with general cooking or household tips, including such topics as how to host parties, holiday preparations, and other subjects, as well as occasional advertisements from Nashville Gas and Heating. Often the recipes and simple decorative illustrations have a seasonal theme.

Biographical or Historical Data
The Nashville Gas and Light Company was incorporated by the Tennessee General Assembly on Nov. 21, 1849, with General Washington Barrow as its president. The first gas street lamp in Nashville, Tenn. was lit on Feb. 13, 1851 at the corner of Market Street and Public Square, near the site of the first gas plant, which manufactured gas from coal. Nashville was the first city in Tennessee to use gas lighting. Gas was used in street lighting for many years and in some home appliances, including lighting, but it did not become popular as a home utility until the mid-1890s. By the end of the decade, numerous homes were equipped with gas stoves for cooking. In 1900, when its charter expired, Nashville Gas and Light Co. became Nashville Gas Company. In 1909, a new power plant was built, and by 1910, gas heat for the home became popular. In 1911, controlling interest of the company was purchased by United Gas Improvement Company of Philadelphia, and the local name was changed to Nashville Gas and Heating Company. In the 1930s, due to anti-trust rulings, UGICP had to liquidate some of its holdings, and they chose to sell their company in Nashville. In 1945 the local company was purchased by Tennessee Natural Gas Lines, Inc., returning control to local hands and soon thereafter, natural gas - instead of manufactured gas - began to be used. The natural gas was brought in pipelines from Texas. In 1946, the name was once again changed to Nashville Gas Company. At an unknown time, Tennessee Natural Resources became the parent company, then in the late 1980s, Piedmont Natural Gas took ownership.
