Biographical or Historical Data
Leslie Cheek, Sr. had made his fortune, in part, by investing in his cousin, Joel's, coffee business, named for the hotel where it was served, the Maxwell House. Construction began on the Cheekwood mansion for Leslie Cheek's family in 1929, and was completed in 1933 by New York architect Bryant Fleming. Created in the Georgian style, the mansion was furnished with antiques and ornamentation from Great Britain. In 1944, the property was deeded to Leslie and Mabel Cheek's daughter, Huldah (Mrs. Walter) Sharp. The Sharp family resided at Cheekwood until 1959. In 1957, they offered the property to a non-profit organization to create a cultural center for Nashville. The Exchange Club of Nashville, the Horticultural Society of Davidson County, the Nashville Museum of Art, and other organizations aided this effort. In 1960, the property was opened to the public.
