Description
Abstract: [from opening title] "This Film Has Been Produced By The Nashville Electric Service In Order To Bring To Its Many Employees The Opportunity Of Seeing The Different Operations And Factors That Make Up A CITY of ELECTRICITY."
Description
Scope and content: Black and white silent film footage showing various Nashville Electric Service (NES) departments and workers from circa 1946. The film demonstrates the disparate operations and various services of NES. Particularly significant is the wide geographical and technical distribution of tasks and personnel which this film shows. A new building, probably in the early planning stages when the film was created, would be constructed several years later and unite all of the different NES departments under one roof.
Description
The film highlights the electrical infrastructure needed for a large city in the mid-twentieth century, including transformers, substations, transmission lines, cables, power poles, and the tasks and workers needed to keep the system running. It shows NES employees at work including: draftsmen; appliance repair and service department; construction and maintenance departments; linemen; the laying of underground cable; substation activities; welding shop; and a variety of other workmen engaged in various tasks, much of it hard labor, outdoors. The vast majority of individuals shown are Caucasian males. In the course of showing employees' activities, a variety of tools, equipment, and supplies are shown, as well as occasional home electrical appliances (such as in the repair shop).
Description
A number of identifiable locations are shown, such as: street scenes and environs along 600 block of Church Street; the Church Street viaduct over 10th Avenue North; Broadway and 8th Avenue North; Jefferson Street; Hermitage Avenue (Lebanon Road) and Fesslers Lane; and the following probable locations: intersection of 5th Street and Shelby in East Nashville; and the Arcade. Other unidentified locations in both urban and rural settings are also featured. There are interior and exterior images of the Watkins building (which housed NES headquarters at the time). The vacant lot at Church Street and 13th Avenue North, where the new NES headquarters building would be constructed in the early 1950s, is also shown.

Biographical or Historical Data
After an unsuccesful lawsuit brought by the Tennessee Electric Power Company (TEPCO) against the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) was dismissed by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1939, the TVA purchased TEPCO's properties, including those in Nashville, Tenn. That same year, the Electric Power Board and the Nashville Electric Service (NES) was created by a special act of the state legislature. During the late 1940s, planning began for the construction of a new NES building. During the week of May 12-17, 1952, the city of Nashville's Electric Power Board held dedication exercises for the new Nashville Electric Service "Electric Center" building erected at Church Street and Thirteenth Avenue. The new facility combined all NES services under one roof. Further details of the complex history of these organizations and related topics can be found in the finding aid and collection of the Nashville Electric Service Public Relations Records in the holdings of the Special Collections Division of the Nashville Public Library.
