Description
Scope and content: Approximately 1200 newspaper clippings of marriage or engagement notices, and obituaries, mounted on sheets of notebook paper and laminated. Occasionally an article may be illustrated with a photograph. Many clippings do not have years indicated, however, those that do, run from 1915 to 1938. There does not appear to be any particular order to the way the clippings are arranged. Page numbers were placed on the pages, probably by library staff, after lamination. (Researchers are requested to inform staff immediately if any of the page numbers fall off while they are examining the materials.) The geographic coverage of the scrapbook is wide-ranging, though probably all persons listed have some relationship to the Middle Tennessee or Southern Kentucky areas. The Tennessee cities of Nashville, Gallatin, Portland, and Sumner County are strongly represented, as are the Kentucky cities of Franklin and Bowling Green. Other entries are as diverse as Florida, California, and elsewhere.
Description
Jean Conyers Herndon indexed the scrapbook in 1992, producing two lists. A guide at the beginning explains the overall methodology of the index and a list of abbreviations, which is applicable to both lists.
Description
The first list is sorted alphanumerically by Soundex number - not by surname. It is important to remember that Soundex codes do not put names in full alphabetical order. Still, this list can be easily skimmed for the surname of interest, even if the Soundex code is not known.
Description
The second list is sorted alphabetically by place. Those without a place come first. Sometimes those with no place listed will have information in the Notes field which may enable a place to be discerned, but there is no order to this information. Following those with no place, the listing continues, sorted first by state, and thereunder by city (or county).
