Description
Scope and content: Oral history interview with Madison businessman Douglas G. Odom, Jr., conducted 5 June 2007 by James T. Havron as part of the Library Interviews series of the Nashville Public Library's Nashville Business Leaders Oral History Project. During the 80 minute interview, Odom discusses such topics as his childhood; his family's business, Odom's Tennessee Pride Sausage, including the role his mother, Louise Odom, played in the business's success; his service in the Marine Corps; how his grandfather and father got started in the meat industry; how his father started the sausage business with a loan from a family friend; the company's involvement with the American Meat Institute; the creation of the trademark Farm Boy icon; how the company has focused its advertising over the years; the success of Odom's Tennessee Pride Sausage as a small business; the strength of his business competitors; and the role copyright has played in protecting the company's trademark.

Biographical or Historical Data
Douglas G. Odom, Jr., was born 24 Jan. 1929. His father's family was originally from Nashville, and he moved to Nashville with his parents shortly after his birth. His father started Odom's Tennessee Pride Sausage in 1943 in Madison, Tenn., which subsequently grew into a major company with multi-regional distribution and plants in three staes. He served in the US Marine Corps during peace time.
