Description
Scope and content: Two items relating to the Tennessee Valley Authority, or TVA. One item is a large illustrated booklet, produced in 1936, entitled: "Pictorial Handbook of the Tennessee Valley." It shows dams and agricultural scenes, and includes projections and plans for future activities of the TVA. Subjects discussed primarily focus upon dams, flood control, hydroelectric power, river navigation, lake and water recreation, electrification, and the agricultural benefits of TVA projects. Brief mention of the creation of the town of Norris, Tennessee, as a result of the construction of Norris Dam, is also included, with illustrations. A centerfold map of the Tennessee River and TVA projects provides details about the breadth of impact of the TVA in Tennessee. Images of tourist scenes, especially in Knoxville and Chattanooga, are also included, as are mentions of Chickamauga and Shiloh Civil War battlefield parks. A variety of statistics are to be found on the final page of the booklet.
Description
A program from the 1941 TVA Electrical Development Conference, held in Chattanooga, Tenn. lists the topics and speakers for this event.

Biographical or Historical Data
The Tennessee Valley Authority was established by an act of Congress in 1933, one of many New Deal agencies initiated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Designed to harness and control the power of the rivers in the Tennessee River Valley, especially the Tennessee River itself, the TVA began building dams to control floods, improve navigation and generate electricity. This dramatically improved agriculture in the region by aiding in irrigation and erosion control, and bringing electricity to rural areas. In turn, electrification brought increased economic development, new industries, and home and living improvements throughout the region.
