Biographical or Historical Data
Lemuel Russell Campbell was born in Lebanon, Tenn. on Apr. 20, 1859, the son of former Tennessee governor William Bowen Campbell and his wife, Francis Owen Campbell. Lemuel attended Cumberland University and Vanderbilt University, where he graduated in 1881 and obtained his master's in 1882. He then entered law school at Columbia University in New York where he graduated in 1883, and returned to Nashville. In 1893, he married Johnnie Marshall, daughter of John Marshall, a Nashville attorney. Together Lemuel and Johnnie had three sons: William Bowen, Matthew McClung, and Francis Russell. A long-time attorney in Nashville, Lemuel was a deacon at First Presbyterian Church and a founder of the Erskine Club and Old Oak Club. He also served on the board of the Tennessee School for the Blind. He and his family lived for many years at the home and dairy farm known as Dun Ailie, located near Murfreesboro Road. A prior owner of the property was Johnnie's mother, Ellen C. Marshall, and it was said that the name was Scottish for "Ellen's Hill." Johnnie died in December 1923. Lemuel died on Nov. 3, 1942 and was buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
