On her family's farm in the town of Star, eight-year-old Mae eagerly follows the progress of the 1969 Apollo 11 flight and moon landing and dreams that she might one day be an astronaut, too.
In 1969, as her own family is falling apart, ten-year-old Mamie finds comfort in conducting a one-sided correspondence with the least famous astronaut heading toward the moon on Apollo 11.
As the Apollo 11 mission draws to a close there is a crisis at the tracking station on Guam: the antenna that will track the spacecraft during reentry, and allow mission control to communicate with the astronauts is stuck--and ten-year-old Marty is the only one small enough to reach in and grease the ball bearings that allow the antenna to move.
