When the Wells goldmine closed in the 1960's, the town's economy was devastated. The miners went off for work elsewhere and a wave of hippies move in saving the town from extinction. Overtime, Wells became a vibrant arts community. In 2016, Barkerville Gold Mine got an injection of new blood and the hope of striking gold once again. If they are successful then Wells could have an arts/industry identity crisis in its future.

This new crop of leaders is focused entirely on possibilities for the future, and on making the town a place where people want to stay.
