Description
Scope and content: Various items relating to the short life and death of Maggie (Margaret) Lee Page. Collection includes a small autograph album, containing signatures dating from 1898 to 1906, with most entries dated 1900 and 1901. Most individuals sign with only their first names. A dual letter from Maggie's mother and Maggie when she was about four or five years old to Maggie's father is also in the collection. Several items related to Maggie's attendence at Peabody College for Teachers at the University of Nashville are part of the collection. Three essays are included. One is on the subject of compulsory education, which includes statements concerning the status of education in the South, in Tennessee, and in Davidson County. Two others are short themes on reading and on poverty. Receipts from six classes dated Feb. 1906 with signatures of her professors are also part of the collection. Finally, a number of items concerning Maggie's death on May 18, 1906 from an unstated illness comprise the last folder of materials, and it includes: an obituary, a note of condolence from one of Maggie's instructors, a funeral card, cemetery lot deed from Mt. Olivet Cemetery, a receipt and a promissory note relating to the cemetery, which indicates her body was initially buried in an incorrect location on the lot and had to be moved. One artifact, a heart-shaped locket containing hair, is stored separately.
