Description
Scope and content: Oral history interview with Nashville and Florida businessman and real estate broker Adam G. Adams, III, conducted on 4 October 1976 by Ann Wells as part of the Historic Nashville, Inc. Tennessee Centennial Oral History Project. During the 33 minute interview, Adams discusses his family; his experiences at the Tennessee Centennial Exposition; and seeing President Theodore Roosevelt when he visited Nashville during the early 1900s.

Biographical or Historical Data
World War I veteran, businessman and real estate broker of Nashville, Tenn., and Coral Gables, Fla. The oldest of seven boys, Adams was born on 24 July 1887 to Adam G. and Susan Howell Adams. His paternal grandparents immigrated to the United States from Ireland in 1839. His maternal grandfather was Morton Boyte Crawford Howell, a Nashville attorney who served as Mayor of Nashville in 1874. Adams graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1908. From 1911 to 1912, Adams worked for the American Cyanamid Company in Baltimore, Maryland, and New York and traveled a great deal over the East. He was transferred to the Atlanta headquarters in December 1912 and traveled across the southeastern part of the US during 1913. In 1914, he worked for the Inernational Agricultural Coporation in Atlanta as Manufacturer's Agent. From 1916 to 1917, Adams worked with Adams-Stone Motor Company in Princeton, Ky. In 1918, he enlisted in the US Army and was stationed in Washington in Nitrate Division, Army Ordnance. He was discharged from the Army on 30 June 1919 but continued as a citizen employee of Army Ordnance until 1920, when he accepted a position with Ashcraft-Wilkinson Company in Atlanta. From 1923 to 1924 Adams served as vice president of Porter Fertlizing Company in Atlanta. He married Mary Faith Dorsey Yow on 15 Aug. 1924. From 1925 to 1967 Adams worked as a real estate broker in Miami and Coral Cables, Fla., and served as chairman of the Florida Library and Historical Commission. Adams was one of the early leaders in the formation of the South Florida Historical Society. Adams died on 26 Oct. 1976, just twenty-two days after this interview was recorded.
