Description
Scope and content: Scattered issues of Take One newspaper, published in Nashville, Tenn. Holdings begin with vol. 1 issue 5 (Dec. 1977/Jan. 1978) when it was published on a monthly basis, to vol. 3 no. 13 (Aug. 13, 1979), by which time it had become a weekly.
Description
The range of topics covered in each issue generally include: personality profiles and interviews; coverage of local television and radio stations; short fiction and essays; issues and topics common to the 1970s including the energy crisis, seventies fads such as "rolfing" and other subjects not likely to be given coverage in more traditional publications, such as UFOs, psychics, health foods, and the environmental and feminist movements. Substantial coverage was given to the local music scene including profiles of individual musicians, bands, reviews of concerts and performances, calendar listings, and advertisements for venues, especially Exit/In and the Old Time Picking Parlor. Both rock and country music were covered. Regular columns in the paper focused on food, restaurants, and cocktails; reviews of books, albums, and films, as well as local theatrical productions and concerts; events listings; and a spirited and often humorous letters to the editor column. One issue, from Aug. 13, 1979, is particularly noteworthy for its interview with Bill Wilkinson, Imperial Wizard of the Invisible Order of the Ku Klux Klan.

Biographical or Historical Data
Take One monthly newspaper, billed as "The Alternative Magazine for Middle Tennessee" was founded in Nashville, Tenn. in 1977 by publisher Thom W. King. Primarily distributed for free in the Nashville area, the paper began to be distributed statewide in Mar. 1979. A few months later, King sold it to Charles Biderman on June 1, 1979, who quickly changed it to a weekly format, but returned to publishing on a monthly basis in Sept. 1979, at which point the newspaper ceased publication. This was followed by a lawsuit King brought against Biderman in the fall of 1979 for lack of payment, with King receiving a favorable judgement. Despite these troubles, the newsmagazine appeared to be modestly successful under King’s leadership, attracting contributions from local talent such as photographer Bob Schatz and cartoonist Dani Aguila. The publication experienced at least three subtle variations in its title throughout its lifespan, beginning as: Take One: The Alternative Magazine for Middle Tennessee; then becoming simply Take One Magazine; and later, Nashville’s Take One. The last issue published was in Sept. 1979
